South Tynedale Railway - Alston, Cumbria.

 

Both steam and diesel traction is used, in addition a fleet of passenger and works vehicles allows both passenger and works train to be run.

Steam Locomotives.

Naklo (no. 10)

This is a Polish 70hp steam loco, built by Chrzanow in 1957. Of 0-6-0WTT type, this loco has both a tender and tanks (well tank and side tanks). The following picture shows Naklo at Gilderdale during the Society’s 25th anniversary celebrations in April 1998.

Helen Kathryn (no. 14)

This 70hp steam loco was built by Henschel, Germany, in 1948. Of 0-4-0T type, this loco was built to assist in the clear up of Dresden following the Second World War. The next picture shows Helen Kathryn waiting at a signal before entering the station.

Chaka’s Kraal No 6 (no. 12)

Built in the UK in 1940 for export to South Africa, this Hunslet steam loco of 0-4-2T type has a distinctive spark-arresting chimney and is rated at 90hp. The next picture shows Chaka on the passenger train at Alston.

Thomas Edmondson (no.6)

This 90hp steam loco was built in Germany by Henschel in 1918, for use by the Imperial Army. It is of 0-4-0T type, and is named after the inventor of the Edmondson Railway Ticket, who lived not far from the Alston area. Currently out of service, the next picture shows Thomas Edmondson being towed into the station during the 1997 steam gala.
